Asemic Wanderings
To grasp the underlying

	Reading List
	Info

	Asemic wanderings is a space for expanded thoughts and extracts from research-based experiments&nbsp;on open semantics and alternative narrative tools.

The focus is to explore whether language, a communication system, can be re-approached from different perspectives and if the meaning of signs can change, using asemic writing and performative activities as starting points.

Through collective and individual activities, we aim to question language and power structures that exist around us.

As Henri Michaux has mentioned, it is our duty to contradict the flawed communicative system and the conventional transcription of reality and aim for new ones.

	<img width="2000" height="1125" width_o="2000" height_o="1125" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/55dc454b2c1321e9ec6b6ffb310e66b859b802702f79db81fe61ea830ac8b046/04_About_Image.jpg" data-mid="111112883" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/55dc454b2c1321e9ec6b6ffb310e66b859b802702f79db81fe61ea830ac8b046/04_About_Image.jpg" />

Since my first MA year in RCA in Visual Communication, I have been trying to approach language by exploring different communication systems. Through my research, I encountered fragments of various art movements that have focused on manipulating language, and Asemic writing captured my attention. The fact that it looks like writing, but the semantic value of its "words/marks" is abandoned, raised questions around semiotics and the relationship between the author and the reader.

	Experiment 1: Asemic Notations

	Through an exploration of asemic writing -including primary research and study of artists using this medium- I focused my research on questioning whether language -a communication system- can be reapproached from different perspectives and whether signs could be interpreted differently. Thus, I was trying to push myself to experiment with this concept. The symbols in my notebook drew my attention. I decided to take a tracing paper and copy all the marks except the letters (alphabet) with a pencil. It was exciting to see this page again. It looked like a map. Specifically, the notations looked like traffic signs and highways that direct you 'to turn left...then right...to stop...pay attention' and other actions. You could see a constant movement. Then, I traced more pages; it was a different narrative; it had a different tempo from the previous one as well as the next one. In that particular way, I started realising through these signs a different perspective of language. I was "observing" the movements of my thoughts. How one idea leads to the next one, and how those ideas generate other subcategories of ideas etc. The absence of words created an interesting space, where you could "stand" for a while before meeting the next sign that will navigate you to a different route.

	Experiment 2:Getting lost with a map

I returned to my notation marks, and I re-challenged the idea of the map. I asked myself, 'What if these notations become a real map and guide people through space?'. And since the relationship between the author and the reader was a subject that concerned me, I thought it could be an interesting case to share my asemic map with another person that could place their&nbsp;own context. I was curious to see the reader's journey while making their own links in a place where they will situate himself.
Since walking was the only thing that people could do during the lockdown(due to Covid-19), I had the chance to take long walks with my friends to see them and have a conversation with them. I found it quite interesting that walking and talking share similar patterns, and these two actions influenced each other. Internal and external factors shape the conversations along the journey.
Bringing together these two ideas, 'asemic maps' and 'walking as a communicating process', I asked two friends to try to navigate themselves in Victoria Park in London. My instructions were to try together to interpret the map as they want and document the process with a GoPro camera.
The audio/visual outcome that I received gave some interesting points for further examination:
The links that they made between the map and the place.

The constant adaptation of their perspectives to read the signs.

But most importantly, the ping pong conversations that they had to build their pathways. They both told me that it was a key element that they had each other in this journey since each of them brought their insights every time they got stuck.

As a response to this experiment, I made a visual essay in dialogue with the performative experiment. The audience will witness my thoughts and questions explored in my research practice and the participant's journey.

The inSite workshop was part of a collaborative 3-day digital event during the RCA WIP Show 2021. I had the opportunity to design and facilitate this event with VisCom fellow students, namely, Anastasia Arjalies, Leonidas Anagnostou, Lothar Wiessmann, Myrna Marianovits, Yan Li, Yimin Qiao and Wing Shan Wong(Pat). As “SITE” students, we decided to organise inSite in order to highlight the spatial and methodological aspects of site-specificity as a feature in one's creative practice.&nbsp;For this event, we invited three artists, Emeric Lhuisse, David Roberts and Anna Hart, that opened each day by presenting their work. Following each lecture, different students led short workshops or introduced the audience to their practice.

	inSite Day 3
Specifically, on the third day, I presented a part of my practice and ran a short workshop. The site that I was examining was a page of a text, and I used Asemic Writing as a tool to explore the idea of multiple narratives.
Through my Asemic Writing research, I am trying to question the idea of authorship, starting from a written text and opening up more generally to the concept of language, which is everywhere. What are the dominant narratives around us? How much do we allow different narratives to enter and be considered equally?
Learning from an early age the need to decode and find out what the author of a text wants to say; is not allowing the reader to be free and express himself/herself as he/she wants. Thus, I realise that making notes - a natural- process while reading a text brings up a personal perspective of interpretation to the surface. An active engagement that allows you to intervene in a narrative intimately.

	Workshop:
Collective Reading &amp; Annotating

	For the workshop, I selected five different texts which challenge the concept of semiotics and communication from different perspectives:

Dialectic &amp; dialogic conversation,Richard Sennett, Together -The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation.

Magdalen Walks, Oscar Wilde

‘Twitter permanently suspends Trump’s account to prevent ‘further incitement of violence’, The Guardian (extract from the article)
The Death of the Author, Roland Barthes (extract
from the essay)
‘Cities &amp; Signs 1’, Invisible Cities, Italo Calvino (chapter from the book)For this joint exercise, I asked people to abandon the traditional way of taking notes and meet in a safe space&nbsp;(anonymously)&nbsp;where they could read &amp; annotate together—allowing the aspect of play, interaction and interfering with each other. Participants came across other people's marks and entered a new mode of discussion since some found similarities and other interesting differences in the way they examined the text.After mark-making, an exercise of text abstraction followed to highlight the beauty and the importance of having polyphony in a group of people and generally in a community. Colourful voices became visible, pointing out the existence of multiple layers of reading and narratives.

The Anarchic Writing workshop took place in the framework of AcrossRCA 2021 in the Royal College of Art. During this week, multiple student-led interdisciplinary collaborative projects explore new ideas, approaches and skills. This week, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a VisCom fellow student and friend, Mirna Marianovits, whose practice crosses similar pathways with my practice. We are both interested in different ways of writing and participatory activities.

	We decided to create a 3-day workshop with the name Anarchic Writing, open to students across all the masters of RCA. This workshop aimed to investigate -through creative writing- ways of enforcing one's expressive skills and confidence regarding their ability to share a thought or a story by implementing verbal or alternative narrative tools through collaborative and individual activities. Each day was dedicated -respectively- to collective storytelling, asemic writing, and performative delivery of language.
Our intention was to introduce this workshop to the participants as a series of games -as fun activities- instead of a strictly academic workshop for developing their writing skills. The anarchic aspect of these sessions relates to the way we perceive writing; not only as a freeing process, but also as an expressive tool beyond formal communication. The overall workshop aimed at re-approaching writing, not as a medium for delivering specific information or a predetermined narrative, but as an existential sharing of emotions and experiences in the form of an interactive -dialogical- act. In this sense, writing could also exceed its conventional form by encompassing -in the sense of various depictions of words- texture, shapes, different layouts, gestures and other tangible and intangible expressions.

	In this workshop, particularly on the second day, we focused on Asemic writing. I introduced them to three activities inspired by Asemic Writing practices and the main ideas behind its manifesto, open-meanings and co-authorship. All the activities took place in the Mural, a digital platform with useful tools for writing/drawing and a space that allows people to see other people's activity and interact with each other.&nbsp;

	Activity 1: Create your own Asemic writing

	In the first activity, I asked the participants to do their own asemic writing. Everyone was free to do their own experiments for one hour and then share them with us (anonymously to have the freedom to express themselves as they want). The participants tried out different kinds of mediums &amp; styles, discovering other ways of writing and communication. They commented that they found this process quite meditative and a way to connect with their body.

	Activity 2:Collectively create an Abstract Comic

	In the second activity, they collectively built an abstract comic (a sequence like a storyboard/comic strip). The participants had to place their drawing next to another participant's drawing and continue the narrative. A unique experience, where they had to abandon the old conventional way of communication and build together something collectively only by using asemic writing and the structure of a comic strip. Everyone said that it was an enjoyable experience. It started a little random initially because they didn't quite understand what they were doing. Still, as they proceeded, they slowly started weaving a narrative together by connecting parts between them and creating an unstructured system.

	Activity 3:
Write individually a story base on the collective Abstract Comic

In the final activity, they had to individually write a story based on the collective abstract comic that they made. Besides the creative writing aspect of this task, the purpose of this exercise was also to emphasise one of the critical aspects of asemic writing that the reader becomes the co-creator of the asemic work. Everyone gave their own unique interpretation of the story and shared it with the rest of us. It was so interesting to hear everyone's narrative. The variations of styles of each text indicated the different possible ways of seeing things and the unique voice of each person. With this last activity, I felt that we came even closer as a group since we shared something common and embraced our differences.

	This aspect of collectivism was an incredible and fulfilling feeling for me. I love to share my knowledge, meet &amp; discuss with new people, create with them, and most importantly, have fun with them. I always thought that it's me giving something from my side, but it is the other way around. It is surprising and unique what you receive back from people. Besides their feedback and comments, which are so important and insightful to improve and evolve as a practitioner, the most important thing is receiving their energy and creativity. These two things give me more strength and will to progress.

	︎

	Tortuous Optional Routes is a workshop aiming to celebrate every reader's interpretation and question the dominant narratives existing in different spaces (whether this is a page of a book or an urban space) using Asemic writing and walking as tools.

	The workshop is based on and includes two specific texts which correspond
to the idea of dominant &amp; multiple narratives and the idea of an open-meaning map that can suggest undiscovered optional routes.The two specific texts are two chapters from the book 'Invisible Cities' by Italo Calvino, a book in which every city may be used as a metaphor for language. The first text was the chapter 'Cities &amp; Signs 1' (Tamara), where citizens do not see things but the sign of things. I specifically selected this chapter because it describes and criticises perfectly how dominant narratives(signifiers) exist everywhere, in every object, building, space and event - making it challenging to discover what is beyond all these and what we want to see.
The second text was the chapter 'Trading Cities 5' (Esmeralda), where the shortest distance between any two points has many possible routes. Passersby are immersed in the labyrinth of streets of Esmeralda, with infinite possibilities of reading their routes, so there is no repetition. This idea reminds me of Guy Debord's notion of psychogeography and dérive, which advocates the act of becoming lost in the city. An act of resistance in walking with an agenda from point A to point B and a way to explore and absorb different aspects of the urban life world.

	We began our workshop with a short introduction on Asemic writing practices
that introduce ideas around open semantic meanings and (co-)authorship. Then a three-channel series of activities followed:

	Activity 1: Collective Reading &amp; Annotating

	In the first activity, we focused on the value of the multiple layers of reading a written piece can have. The workshop took place on the Mural platform,&nbsp; which allows us to be in space altogether and understand others' presence. Every participant had to select a specific colour of a pen tool and make notes as they read the texts.&nbsp; Each action was transparent and could be traced. Having the option to be anonymous or having a nickname transformed this room into a less aggressive and more friendly environment where people had the freedom to express themselves as they wanted. Despite the fact that everyone was in their room, in another place of London, seeing other people's active cursors gave the sense that the room was full of life.
Exploring ideas around collectivity, I was curious to test how people react to be 'together' while reading and making notes on the same text. This sense of togetherness was visible from the simultaneous activity of the cursors and the pen tools that they used to make notations. The main feedback that I received from the participants was that they had a new and unique experience. Taking notes is something that usually is a high individualistic action. Exposing yourself and seeing other people make notes with you opens up the boundaries of this private action. People start looking at what the other person is doing. They found it interesting if someone was making similar notes under the exact phrase and sharing the same ideas, but also exciting to see how people reacted differently to other words.
The reading from a linear reading perspective becomes a web where you can read it from different ways. You become aware of this interactivity. Some of them drew notations around other participants' notes, or on them, or under them, or continued something from the point that someone left it. After a while, you lose the point of who comes first and who is behind each interpretation. The different layers of reading are blended, creating non-hierarchical, heterogeneous, multiplicitous, and acentered writings, as Deleuze and Guattari coined the term, a rhizomorphic reading.

<img width="2218" height="1120" width_o="2218" height_o="1120" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4129009638d54afdcb57ff4a64e741a6832dfe705ad24f94b3ca466d4e32e920/TOR_Mural_with-text.jpg" data-mid="110847753" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4129009638d54afdcb57ff4a64e741a6832dfe705ad24f94b3ca466d4e32e920/TOR_Mural_with-text.jpg" />

	Activity 2:Creation of Asemic Maps

	For the second part of the workshop, I introduced them to the exercise of text abstraction to create an alternative way of reading notation marks. These notation marks became Asemic Maps and helped the participants navigate -drift- themselves in a physical space.
	<img width="2218" height="1120" width_o="2218" height_o="1120" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/acf337082e7650607f4944587ec16bdd1a4b3dcde6fa4ae086db25c05910fb5f/TOR_Mural_withOUT_text.jpg" data-mid="110847758" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/acf337082e7650607f4944587ec16bdd1a4b3dcde6fa4ae086db25c05910fb5f/TOR_Mural_withOUT_text.jpg" />

	Activity 3:
Walking &amp; sharing experiences

In the third activity, we tried to transform the act of reading into the act of walking. I asked the participants to print or screen-print the Asemic Maps and step out of their house. Through walking, we had to explore the urban space around us using this map. Using a WhatsApp group, we shared our (live)experience and co-created a new narrative. &nbsp;
The content of the narrative was generated from our walk while exploring the space around us. During this process, we walked together but also apart. Αpart due to the restriction of the Covid-19 but together through the Whatsapp group chat on which fragments were shared at set intervals and through various mediums. These fragments brought them together, and while sharing photographs, text, video and voice clips, Whatsapp syncing process created a linear, but non-predetermined hierarchical, new narrative. The different voices of the co-authors became one in the form of a long scroll.
People found different ways to interpret the Asemic Maps and connect these threads with the reality around them. For many, there was a progression in this process. They started to make easy connections between the colours or shapes between the map and the real world. But as they moved further, they moved into a more architectural and mathematical organisation. Some of them, in the end, moved into sound, ambiences and atmospheres. From simple to more complicated and layered connections. In this process, they perceive the environment as moving along, taking different routes and discovering new signs and narratives around them.

	Socially engaged practices during the Covid-19 can be challenging, but I am thrilled that we achieved it. We managed to get to know each other and communicate through collective &amp; individual creative processes. I am grateful that I witnessed this process and had the chance to meet unique and colourful voices, which in the end, united and co-created a beautiful new narrative. To express my gratitude to the participants, I created and gave to them a tangible souvenir of our collective experience. I designed and printed a small publication that contains:

An A4 riso-printed brochure with the description of the workshop &amp; the content of the publication.&nbsp;
An A2 screen-printed poster of the Asemic map of the activity 1 &amp; 2 that took place in the Mural platform.
An A5 publication(24 meter concertina) of the new narrative that was created in our Whatsapp group chat.

An A4 clear transparency film, to carry on the activities by themselves.
